Quick Test:

How YouTube Monetization Works

Key benchmarks required by the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)

1,000 Subscribers Requirement

Channels must reach a minimum threshold of 1,000 active subscribers before they can submit their channel for YPP review.

4,000 Watch Hours or 10M Shorts Views

Creators need either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views within 90 days.

Understanding CPM & RPM

CPM (Cost Per Mille) is what advertisers pay per 1,000 impressions. RPM is the net revenue the creator actually earns after YouTube takes its 45% revenue share.

Niche Influences Earnings

High-commercial niches such as Personal Finance, Tech Reviews, and Business SaaS command significantly higher CPMs than general entertainment.

What Is a YouTube Monetization Checker?

A YouTube monetization checker is a tool that helps analyze whether a YouTube channel appears eligible for monetization and how closely it aligns with the requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

A good checker should do more than return a simple “yes” or “no.” It should show the channel's public statistics, explain the YPP thresholds, identify information that can only be confirmed by the channel owner, and separate verified data from estimates.

ThumbHD takes this a step further by showing what the tool knows, what it cannot know, and why.

That helps creators, brands, agencies, marketers, and researchers evaluate a YouTube channel without confusing public signals with YouTube's internal account information.

Can You Check If a YouTube Channel Is Monetized?

There are several methods to verify channel earnings, ranging from manual checks to automated analysis:

Method 1Recommended

Use the ThumbHD Checker

Simply paste the channel or video URL into our search bar above. Our automated tool analyzes ad items, formats, and insertion tokens to deliver an accurate status report.

Method 2

Visual Indicators

A channel is highly likely to be monetized if you see a "Join" button for memberships, frequent mid-roll ads across multiple videos, or active Super Chat and Super Thanks features.

Method 3

Source Code Inspection

By viewing a video's page source code, you can search for strings like yt_ad or is_monetization_enabled. However, since YouTube can now run ads on non-partner channels, source code checks can frequently produce false positives.

Yes, you can analyze public signals, but there is an important limitation: YouTube does not provide a public indicator that definitively reveals another creator's YPP enrollment.

You may see ads on a video, but ads alone are not proof that the creator is receiving ad revenue. YouTube says ads can appear on videos even when the channel is not in the YouTube Partner Program, and rights holders can also monetize content they control.

That's why ThumbHD uses an evidence-based monetization assessment rather than pretending that a public ad observation is the same thing as a private YPP status.

How to Check If a YouTube Channel Is Monetized

Follow these simple steps to run a fast, non-intrusive channel verification

1

Enter the channel URL

Copy the YouTube channel URL or @handle and paste it into the ThumbHD YouTube Monetization Checker.

Examples:
youtube.com/@channelname
youtube.com/channel/UC...
2

Run the monetization check

ThumbHD analyzes the public channel information available to the checker and organizes it into a monetization report.

3

Review YPP eligibility

The report separates subscriber requirements, upload activity, watch-hour requirements, and Shorts-view requirements.

4

Check what is actually verified

Some information is public; other information is only available to the channel owner in YouTube Studio.

5

Review the next steps

Your report highlights what to verify in YouTube Studio and what you can improve before applying for YPP.

Long-Form Video vs. YouTube Shorts Monetization

A fully monetized channel does not automatically mean all of its Shorts are earning money. Shorts featuring copyrighted, unlicensed material will not be monetized, even if the parent channel is. Furthermore, because long-form content supports mid-roll ads on videos over 8 minutes, it commands significantly higher RPMs than the pooled revenue distribution model used for the Shorts feed.

YouTube Partner Program (YPP) Requirements

YouTube currently has different monetization pathways.

Early YPP Access

Fan-funding & community monetization

For the expanded YPP features, creators can qualify with:

  • 500 subscribers
  • 3 public uploads in the last 90 days
  • Either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days

These features include things such as channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and Shopping where available.

Full Ad-Revenue Eligibility

Ad revenue share & YouTube Premium earnings

For full advertising-revenue access, YouTube currently lists:

  • 1,000 subscribers
  • Either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days

YouTube then reviews the channel against its monetization policies. Meeting the numbers alone does not guarantee approval.

YouTube Monetization Requirements: 2027 Update

Updated for 2026 · 2027 changes scheduled

YouTube has announced changes beginning February 1, 2027 for new creators seeking the ads/Premium entry threshold:

Path A · Watch Hours
  • 1,000 subscribers
  • 8,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days
Path B · Shorts Views
  • 1,000 subscribers
  • 20 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days

YouTube says the 500-subscriber fan-funding requirements remain unchanged.
